Contact the exact hotel directly with your booking name, stay dates and an identifying description. First confirm that staff have your item; then agree how it can be released, packed and returned.

Contact the right hotel, with one complete message

Discovering that your glasses, camera or favourite jacket are still in Lisbon is frustrating, particularly once you have flown home. Start with the hotel’s official website or your booking confirmation. Check the branch and address: a chain’s central reservations team may not be the people who can check a room.

Send reception one clear request rather than several messages with different details. Ask them to check with housekeeping and the team responsible for stored belongings. If you stayed in an apartment, contact the host or property manager through the channel used for the booking.

  • Your reservation name and check-in and check-out dates.
  • Room number, if known, and the last place you remember using the item.
  • A specific description: colour, brand, size, case or distinguishing mark.
  • A photograph of the item, if you already have one.
  • An email address where staff can reach you.

A useful subject line is “Lost item after checkout — [stay dates] — [booking name]”. Avoid including passwords, card details or identity-document copies in the initial enquiry.

A short message you can send to reception

Hello, I stayed at your hotel under [booking name] from [date] to [date], in room [number, if known]. I believe I left [description] in [last known location]. Could you check whether it has been found? If so, please confirm who is holding it, how long it can be kept, and whether you allow collection by an authorised person or courier. Thank you.

Keep a copy of your message and any reference number. If you call later, use the same details so the hotel can connect the conversations.

If the hotel confirms it has your item

Before paying for transport, establish three things: that it is the correct object, that it is available for release, and how it must be collected. Ask for a photograph where practical, or confirm a feature that distinguishes it from similar items.

Ask whether reception can package it and attach a shipping label. Do not assume that handing an object to a courier includes a packaging service. If the hotel cannot prepare a parcel, you need an arrangement that includes collection and packing.

Find out whether staff require written authorisation, the collector’s name or a particular collection window. Confirm the collection address and department: the hotel’s general address alone may not be enough. Ask about any collection deadline and storage charge before making a plan.

Choose a return arrangement that works from abroad

Depending on what the hotel permits, the options may include shipping arranged by the hotel, a courier collecting a prepared parcel, or an authorised person collecting the unpacked object. Get agreement from the holder before booking any of them.

For an international return, the price depends on the packed dimensions, weight, destination and contents. Electronics, perfumes and valuable items may need a different service. Our guide to shipping a lost item home from Lisbon explains the information to gather before requesting a quote.

If you are still waiting for an answer

Follow up with the original message, the date you sent it and your reservation details. A lack of response is not confirmation that an item has been found or lost permanently. Ask for a named department and a reference so you know who to contact next.

If you want local help with calls and follow-ups, Left in Lisbon search assistance has a fixed €30 fee: up to 3 agreed locations, up to 2 attempts per location over 3 business days from the agreed start date, plus a written update. The fee covers the agreed work, not a guaranteed recovery. Once that work has been carried out it is not refunded merely because the item is not found or delivered, subject to statutory rights.

If the hotel has already found it, request a collection and return quote instead. Packaging and shipping are separate from the search fee. You can also handle the hotel contact yourself; paid assistance is optional.

Common questions

Can someone collect my item from the hotel for me?

Ask the hotel first. It may accept an authorised person or courier, but it decides what identification and release instructions are needed.

Do I pay the €30 search fee if the hotel has already found it?

A confirmed item can go directly to a collection and shipping enquiry. The €30 fee is for an agreed search, not a compulsory charge for every return.
